Alex Eala, Venus Williams to start Canadian Open doubles campaign

Alexandra "Alex" Eala will once again team up with tennis icon Venus Williams in the doubles draw of the Canadian Open.

Eala is coming off a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, win over Alycia Parks in the Round of 64 of the singles draw before plunging back into action in the doubles.

The duo will begin their campaign on Thursday (Friday, Philippine time) against the tandem of Miyu Kato and Liudmila Samsonova in the Round of 32.

Williams is one of the most decorated players in tennis history.

A former world No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, she has also enjoyed remarkable success in doubles alongside her younger sister, Serena Williams.

The Williams sisters completed a career Grand Slam in women's doubles, winning all four major titles. They captured six Wimbledon crowns (2000, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2016), four Australian Open titles (2001, 2003, 2009, and 2010), two French Open championships (1999 and 2010), and two US Open crowns (1999 and 2009).

They also won three Olympic gold medals in women's doubles for the United States at the 2000 Sydney, 2008 Beijing, and 2012 London Games.

Eala, meanwhile, has welcomed the opportunity to partner with the tennis legend.

The pair first teamed up at the Bad Homburg Open in June, where they won their opening two matches to reach the quarterfinals. They defeated Alexandra Osborne and Catherine Harrison, 6-3, 6-4, before bowing out to Olivia Nicholls and Tereza Mihalikova, 6-3, 6-2.

Eala and Williams were also initially entered in the DC Open doubles tournament, but Williams instead partnered with Diana Shnaider.

The Canadian Open marks another opportunity for the duo to build on their chemistry, with Eala entering the tournament in top form after capturing her first WTA Tour singles title at the DC Open.
