Alex Eala faces former Olympic champ Belinda Bencic in biggest Canadian Open test yet

After overcoming an Olympic champion in her previous title run, Alexandra Eala now faces another as she takes on former Summer Games gold medalist Belinda Bencic for a spot in the Canadian Open quarterfinals.

The world No. 20 Filipina tennis star locks horns with No. 14 Bencic in the Round of 16 slated for Monday at 8:10 a.m. (Philippine time) at Centre Court of the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.

Bencic is the 12th-seeded player in the tournament and is looking to go deeper in the WTA1000 event as she seeks to add another title into her collection.

Bencic knows what it takes to win on the biggest stages, having amassed 10 singles titles on Tour, including her 2015 Canadian Open triumph, where she stunned Serena Williams in the semifinals before overcoming Simona Halep in the final.

While Bencic is no stranger to high-stakes battles, Eala has shown she can thrive under pressure, too.

Eala recently proved that in her campaign at the DC Open, ousting reigning Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the opening round before dethroning Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 16. Eala went on stunning the top three seeds Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka, and Jessica Pegula to win her maiden WTA Tour title.

Eala will look to carry that confidence into her fourth-round showdown with Bencic.

The Filipina sensation is coming off a pair of three-set victories, overcoming Alycia Parks in the Round of 64 before grinding out a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win against Caty McNally in the next round.
