Gilas Pilipinas Women stun defending champs Malaysia

Gilas Pilipinas Women pulled off an upset against women's basketball reigning champions Malaysia, 81-75, at the Southeast Asian Games on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

With the victory, the team is assured of at least a silver medal as it plays Thailand in the finals on Tuesday.

Afril Bernardino paced the Philippines with 18 points and 19 rebounds, while Jack Animam also had a double double performance of 14 markers and 11 boards.

Gilas led by as many as 12 points, but the Malaysians rallied to take control in the fourth, 74-68. Head coach Patrick Aquino then switched the defensive scheme to the press to stop the bleeding and Ana Castillo responded with back to back three pointers to erase the deficit.

Janine Pontejos then took over in the clutch, hitting her free throws and a beautiful teardrop to put the Philippines on top for good.
