Jaja Santiago drops 11 as Ageo Medics cruise to third win in a row; Espejo's FC Tokyo falls to Sakai
Jaja Santiago was once again effective as the Saitama Ageo Medics coasted to its third consecutive win in the 2021-2022 Japan V. League with a four-set victory over Victorina Himeji on Saturday.
The Filipina import dropped 11 points, anchored on eight attacks and three blocks, to help the Ageo Medics engineer a 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17 win to improve to 14-8 while Victorina slid to 5-19.
The latest win was Saitama's third win in a row following escapes of Toray Arrows and PFU BlueCats over the weekend.
Mami Uchiseto was unstoppable on the frontline after she fired 19 points all on attacks while Yuka Sato chipped in 13 markers for the Ageo Medics, who are now at fifth spot in the 12-team field.
Meanwhile, Marck Espejo's FC Tokyo had a contrasting result as they fell to Sakai Blazers in straight sets, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19, at the Nippon Steel Sakai Gymnasium.
Espejo had a subpar outing, producing only six points while Kvaren Jonas led the squad with 14 points all anchored on attacks as they went 8-17 in the team standings.
Both the Saitama Ageo Medics and FC Tokyo return to action on Sunday with Santiago's club facing Kurobe at 2 p.m. while Espejo and his team will try to avoid a sweep loss to Sakai when they square off anew at 12 p.m.
Bryan Bagunas and his Oita Miyoshi were supposed to face Suntory Sunbirds today but their game was cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols.
