La Salle's Angel Canino lives up to the hype to earn UAAP Player of the Week honors
De La Salle University rookie Angel Canino showed that she is a good addition to the Lady Spikers' roster as she contributed big numbers to the Taft-based squad's perfect run in the first week of the UAAP Season 85 women's volleyball tournament.
In her debut during La Salle's match against UST which they won in five sets, Canino posted 18 points on 16 attacks. She then scored 13 points on 11 attacks and two aces to lead La Salle against University of the Philippines.
As La Salle took on Ateneo de Manila University, Canino posted a career-high 23 points anchored on 21 attacks, a block, and an ace along with nine digs as the Lady Spikers swept the Blue Eagles, 25-16, 25-20, 25-13.
With her big contribution to the green-and-white squad, Canino has been named as the Collegiate Press Corps UAAP Player of the Week presented by San Miguel Corporation and Philippine Sports Commission with MNL Kingpin, Tinapayan Festival, and Jockey as minor sponsors.
Canino bested teammate Jolina Dela Cruz, National University's Alyssa Solomon, and UST's Eya Laure for the citation deliberated by print and online reporters covering the beat.
“Hindi ko in-expect (na maka-score ng eight points sa first set) at hindi ko rin binibilang 'yung points ko basta maka contribute lang ako inside the court. Pinapaalalahanan ko 'yung sarili ko na gawin yung tama para makatulong sa team. Wala akong iniisip na ‘ay may ganito akong points'," she said after the Ateneo-La Salle game.
("I didn't expect it and I don't really count my points, as long as I'm able to contribute inside the court. I just remind myself to do the right things to help the team. I don't think about how many points I have.")
