La Salle sweeps Adamson to open title defense; UE stuns Ateneo in historic win

UAAP Season 86: Angel Canino of La Salle

Defending champion De La Salle University got off to a flying start in its title defense, sweeping Adamson University, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18, to close out the opening day of UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Reigning MVP Angel Canino starred for the Lady Spikers with 14 points built on 11 attacks and three blocks while Shevana Laput churned out 11 markers as DLSU got an early 1-0 card.

Meanwhile, Casiey Dongallo lived up to the hype as the rookie open hitter steered University of the East to a historic win against Ateneo de Manila University, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-18.

Dongallo led the charge for the Jerry Yee-mentored squad, pouring in 27 points anchored on 26 attacks as the Lady Warriors ended their 14-year losing streak to the Blue Eagles. The last time UE defeated Ateneo was on December 5, 2010.

Dongallo got ample help from the rest of the crew with Riza Nogales and Kayce Balingit chipped in 13 and 12 markers apiece.
