Petro Gazz falls short vs BAIC Motor Volleyball Club, bows out of AVC Champions League
Petro Gazz fell short against BAIC Motor Volleyball Club, 31-29, 19-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12, in the quarterfinals to bow out of competition in the AVC Women's Champions League on Friday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
After a tight first set which eventually went to the China club's favor, the Angels looked like they were close to advancing to the semifinals. However, after being neck-and-neck at 14-12 in the fourth set, BAIC eventually pulled away with three straight points to lead by five. Ranya Musa stopped the scoring drought for Petro Gazz, but BAIC eventually recovered 22-16 before cruising to the victory.
Ye Jin led the China squad with 37 points from 33 attacks and four blocks, while Yufei Lu added 19 points as BAIC sealed a spot in the Final Four.
The win spoiled Gia Day's 35-point explosion for the Angels, with Brooke Van Sickle and Jonah Sabete adding 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Prior to this, Petro Gazz fell to Chinese Taipei's Taipower but bounced back at the expense of Hong Kong's Hip Hing to book a quarters slot.
This also ended the Philippines' campaign in the Asian tourney as Creamline and PLDT also ended their campaigns in the quarters on Thursday.
Earlier, Vietnam's VTV Binh Dien Long An dispatched Taipower, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 28-26 to advance to the semis, along with BAIC, Thailand's Nakhon Ratchasima, and Kazakhstan's Zhetysu.
