UAAP: UST sweeps UE to boost women’s volleyball Final Four bid; Golden Spikers eliminate Red Warriors

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) strengthened its bid for a Final Four berth in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament after sweeping the University of the East (UE), 25-21, 26-24, 25-20, on Sunday at their Quadricentennial Pavilion.

Angge Poyos led the Golden Tigresses with 17 points, along with nine digs and six receptions. Reg Jurado added 11 points and nine digs as UST improved to a 7-4 record.

“Obviously, hindi pa ito [yung top form]. Nakita natin na marami pang need ayusin, especially unang-una yung disiplina… Medyo nauulit siya, kaya disiplina, mental toughness, at emotional toughness. Lesson learned na kahit lamang ka, hindi ka pwede mag-relax. Kailangan tapusin talaga hanggang sa dulo,” Golden Tigresses assistant coach Lerma Giron said.

The victory spoiled Khy Cepada’s 17-point performance for UE, which remained winless in 11 matches. Beatrice Zamudio contributed 12 points in the losing effort.

Earlier in the day, the UST men’s team also prevailed over UE, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-23, officially eliminating the Red Warriors from Final Four contention.

Josh Ybañez powered the Golden Spikers with 25 points built on 21 attacks, along with six receptions and five digs. Joncriz Ayco and Trevor Valera chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively, as UST improved to 7-4.

On the other hand, Raquim Aceron and Roy Piojo scored 17 and 13 points, respectively, for UE, which dropped to a 2-9 slate.
