MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has activated Serbisyo Caravans to visit 16 regions of the country and deliver basic services closer to the public including workers in the informal and rural sectors, and the families of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito D. Roque said the DOLE Serbisyo Caravans would run within November until December, consistent with the forthcoming celebration of the DOLE's historic 75th Anniversary on December 8, 2008 on the theme, "A Celebration of Commitment to Service." He said the event would mark the foundation of the DOLE, celebrating three-quarters of a century of productive local and global contributions to the nation, since it first rose to the status of a full-fledged Department in 1933. Roque said that the DOLE Serbisyo Caravans, under the supervision of the DOLE's Regional Offices (ROs) nationwide, would include jobs fairs and "Diskwento" fairs, tiangge, information on legitimate overseas opportunities, livelihood assistance and other services, as well as assistance to OFW families on OFW reintegration services and programs such as financial literacy training, entrepreneurship/livelihood, values orientation, business counseling, skills counseling, career guidance, and so on. The Labor Chief added that vitally, the Serbisyo Caravan job fairs, apart from facilitating available local opportunities, would provide information on POEA-approved opportunities from legitimate companies overseas, in order to protect applicants from being victimized and endangered by illegal recruiters. Roque earlier issued DOLE Administrative Order (AO) No. 264-A, Series of 2008, directing all DOLE Regional Offices (ROs) in the country's 16 regions to organize their respective Serbisyo Caravans towards a relevant and service-oriented DOLE 75th Anniversary. He designated Labor Undersecretary Lourdes M. Trasmonte as the Project Leader of the DOLE Serbisyo Caravans project, with the following as the team members: the DOLE ROs, and the DOLE's Bureau of Local Employment (BLE), Bureau of Rural Workers (BRW), Bureau of Women and Young Workers (BWYW), Bureau of Labor Relations (BLR), Bureau of Working Conditions (BWC), National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC), and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Earlier, the Labor Chief successfully launched the "75 on 75th: 75 Days of Countdown to DOLE's 75th Anniversary," along with the DOLE 75th Anniversary Commemorative website (www.dole75th.com). He had designated Project Management Teams to ensure further relevant activities including a photo exhibit on the history of DOLE, which will run at various SM Malls nationwide from December 1 to 8 among other events. - From the DOLE website, GMANews.TV
