Berlin folk dance to RP 'binuyugan' and 'cariñosa'

MANILA, Philippines — Residents in Berlin, Germany danced to the binuyugan and cariñosa, two native Filipino dances, at an Asian Cultural Festival earlier this month. The Department of Foreign Affairs said Philippine dance groups performed the dances at the Asian Cultural Festival at Wilmersdorfer Arkaden last May 8 and 9. "Headed by choreographer Veronica Boensch, the Filipiniana Dance Group performed a mountain dance, 'Binuyugan,' and a Spanish-influenced dance, 'Cariñosa.' The dance group is the cultural arm of the Club Bolanon, an active organization of the Philippine Community in Berlin," the DFA said on its website (www.dfa.gov.ph). Wilmersdorfer Arkaden is a commercial complex in Berlin´s district of Wilmersdorf, the DFA noted. It said a huge crowd of shoppers and passers-by enjoyed the cultural performers from the Philippines, Thailand, India, China, and Sri Lanka. The Philippine participation is in line with the celebration of the Philippine Heritage month of May to promote Philippine arts and culture in Germany, the DFA said. It added the event host was the District of Wilmersdorf, City of Berlin, in cooperation with Singha Beer of Thailand. - GMANews.TV
