Metro Manila logged 186 mm of rain in 23 hours on Aug. 29-30 — MMDA

Metro Manila recorded around 186 millimeters (mm) of rainfall in 23 hours from 9 a.m. on August 29 to 8 a.m. on August 30 amid rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Sunday.

The MMDA, citing data from the DOST-PAGASA Science Garden Station in Quezon City, said the rainfall total was recorded over the 23-hour period.

“Based on records from the DOST-PAGASA Science Garden Station in Quezon City, the amount of rainfall dumped on Metro Manila reached 186 millimeters (mm) within 23 hours, from 9 a.m. on August 29 until 8 a.m. today, August 30,” the MMDA said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

On Saturday, PAGASA said 143.5 mm of rain was recorded in Metro Manila in nine hours, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Despite the heavy downpour, floodwaters have begun to subside in some areas, according to the MMDA.

The agency said it had implemented measures to alleviate flooding on roads across Metro Manila, including deploying mobile pumps and conducting declogging and dredging operations.

“Some of the key measures implemented to alleviate flooding include the deployment of mobile pumps to speed up the drainage of accumulated water, as well as ongoing declogging and dredging operations in drainage systems and waterways, and the removal of trash and debris from drainage inlets,” the MMDA said.

The MMDA said it would continue monitoring major roads across Metro Manila 24/7 until floodwaters completely recede.— MCG, GMA News
