Quezon City  to seize 'unsanitary' lechon

Sellers in Quezon City who continue to leave their lechon on the sidewalk and expose them to pollution face the risk of having their products seized by the city's authorities.

Quezon City veterinary officials said they will give lechon sellers three warnings before confiscations happen, dzBB quoted Quezon City veterinary office head Dr. Ana Marie Cabel as saying.

Cabel also advised the lechon sellers to make sure they secure meat inspection certificates for their products to assure the public the food is safe for human consumption.
Earlier, health officials cautioned the public against overeating lechon, which they said may not be all that sanitary especially if it is left outside the sidewalk and exposed to pollution.

But workers at some lechon outlets in Quezon City's La Loma area insisted they leave the lechon in the open air for only a short time, to let the newly roasted pig cool off.

"Inilalabas muna para lumamig, nililinis yan. Pag tapos linisin, ipapasok sa loob ng salamin. Kasi pag umuusok pa, magmo-moist yan sa loob," a worker at a lechon outlet said in an interview on dzBB.

Asked if the lechon may be contaminated due to its exposure to pollution, the worker said, "hindi naman ho, pinapasok namin (no it won't, we eventually bring it inside the store)."

A separate report by dzBB's Allan Gatus said lechon makers expect orders to start peaking about Dec. 20. — LBG, GMA News
