Law creates two new QC districts in time for 2013 polls

A “long-overdue” law passed on Tuesday will divide Quezon City's District 2, creating two additional districts in time for the 2013 midterm elections.

House Bill No. 4245 was approved by President Benigno Aquino III into Republic Act 10170, reapportioning District 2 into three districts: District 2, District 5 and District 6.

Aside from having a congressional representative, 12 Sangguniang Panglunsod members, six from each of the new districts, will be elected in the 2013 midterm elections.

The composition of Districts 1, 3 and 4 will not be affected.

Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., Chair of the Senate Committee on Local Government commended the law’s passage, which he said should have been passed as early as 1992.

“With the large population of Quezon City, the people of this local government unit undoubtedly deserve additional seats in the House of Representatives,” said Marcos. He noted that District 2 is larger than the other districts of Quezon City combined.

Latest data from Marcos estimated that 2.7 million people reside in Quezon City as of January-March 2012, with more than 1.6 million living in the District 2. — GCG/DVM, GMA News
