MMDA: Traffic starts building up around UP for UPCAT

Traffic started building up near the University of the Philippines' campus in Diliman in Quezon City early Saturday for the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said.

MMDA traffic discipline office head Yves Gonzalez said traffic at C.P. Garcia Avenue has become heavy as early as 5:30 a.m.

"As of 5:34 a.m., C.P. Garcia (traffic) is now heavy from Katipunan Avenue," Gonzalez said on his Twitter account. https://twitter.com/doblezeta/status/231504006869049346

He also posted on his Twitter account a photo of vehicles piling up (http://t.co/i2FIvn9q).

But Gonzalez also indicated one of the causes of the traffic jam was illegal parking, posting a photo of one such case.

A separate tweet indicated the traffic near UP campus had been eased before 7 a.m.

On Friday, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman Francis Tolentino admitted the UPCAT may be a cause of heavy traffic in parts of Metro Manila.

Thousands of students were expected to take the UPCAT in the UP campuses in Quezon City and Manila this weekend.

The UP System said there were over 70,000 UPCAT examinees last year It said UPCAT consists of four subtests: Language Proficiency, Science, Mathematics and Reading Comprehension.

"Standardized scores on these subtests are combined with the weighted average of final grades in the first three years of high school to determine qualification into UP," it said.

Also, to implement the policy of democratization to make the UP studentry more representative of the nation’s population, socio-economic and geographic considerations are factored in the selection of campus qualifiers. — ELR, GMA News
