Xavier School in San Juan cancels classes until Friday to focus on relief ops
The great August flood has reminded some schools they also have a mission outside the classroom. Xavier School in San Juan City announced that classes from nursery to high school will be suspended until Friday, August 10, in order for the school to concentrate on relief operations. “After conferring with our administrators, I have decided to suspend classes until August 10 (Friday) to focus on the on-campus relief operations currently being organized, as well as to provide some time for those in our community who have been affected by this catastrophe to recover,” Fr. Johnny Go said in an Aug 8 memo.
Members of the Xavier community were enjoined to extend assistance in any way they can to those affected by the continuous monsoon rains that have caused extensive flooding around Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
Go, however, explained that the extended class suspensions will have corresponding consequences. Several exams have been postponed, and makeup classes will likely be scheduled, he said. “We are postponing our Grade 8 students’ International Primary School Leaving Exams to August 14-17,” Go said.
Xavier School posted the memo on its official Facebook page, and was addressed to the “Xavier School Community.” The Xavier community is accepting relief goods for flood victims. Donations can be dropped off at the Angelo King Multi-Purpose Center through Gate 1, the memo said.
The memo was greeted with cheers from students and parents commending the school for its initiative. “At least the school has taken a stand for student safety. Hope that other schools follow,” Facebook user Coleen Nolasco Luspo-Ordona said. — Patricia Denise Chiu/RSJ, GMA News
