LRTA: Thursday's suicide incident was 10th in last 28 years

The suicide of a woman that disrupted the Light Rail Transit Line 1's operations early Thursday is the 10th since the LRT-1 started operations 28 years ago, the LRT Authority said Thursday afternoon. LRTA spokesman Hernando Cabrera said that while there were 19 suicide attempts since the LRT-1 started operations in 1984, 10 resulted in death. "From 1984 to present (at the) LRT-1, a total of 24 suicide incidents (were recorded), 10 of them fatal. (The 24 included) 19 female and five male," he said on his Twitter account. However, he did not immediately give a breakdown of how many men and women there were in the 10 fatal incidents. Early Thursday, a woman jumped into the tracks at the LRT-1 Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) station. She was killed after being hit by a train. Cabrera said their closed-circuit television footage showed the woman jumped into the tracks immediately after the platform guard walked by her. The LRT-1 connects Roosevelt in Quezon City and Baclaran in southern Metro Manila. On the other hand, Cabrera cited LRTA statistics showing the most suicide incidents occurred in 1998, with seven. Of the seven, five were fatal. Cabrera also admitted he has been stressed out over the incident, which came less than 24 hours after a glitch at the LRT-2 disrupted operations for about two hours. "I'm stressed out, two nights na may problema (we've had problems for two nights), then this one," he said. — LBG, GMA News
