2 jail guards charged for inmate's death in Marikina jail riot
Two jail guards now face criminal charges for the death of an inmate who was shot during a riot at the Marikina City Jail last Sunday.
City police chief Senior Superintendent Gabriel Lopez said they found basis to charge the two for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported.
Lopez initially identified the two jail guards as JO1 Joel Anthony Domingo and JO3 Zaldy Carale, the report said.
An initial investigation showed the inmates at the city jail protested the strict security measures adopted by jail guards in inspecting visitors of the inmates.
The inmates particularly took issue with the removal of conjugal visits and strict searches of female visitors, to the point of inspecting their underwear.
But Lopez said their investigation also showed the stricter measures stemmed from a recent attempt to smuggle methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) into the jail.
Sunday's riot also cost the warden of the Marikina City Jail his post - Senior Inspector Nicanor Ambahan was replaced by Chief Inspector Gregorio Acacio. — RSJ, GMA News
