MMDA opens bicycle lane along Marcos Highway

Bicycle riders can now travel safely along a part of Marcos Highway in Marikina City, after the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) opened a bicycle lane there Tuesday.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino led the inauguration of the bike lane, the MMDA's second after a 1.75-km bike lane was opened in Remedios Circle in Malate, Manila.

"We wanted to extend the existing bike lanes in the inner roads of Marikina to Marcos Highway to further promote the healthy practice of using bicycles as every day means of transportation," Tolentino said.

He said another bike lane will be inaugurated along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City next week.

Plans are also being readied to put up a similar bike lane segment of Epifanio delo Santos Avenue (EDSA).

Inaugurating the Marikina bike lane along with Tolentino were Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman and Vice Mayor Jose Fabian Cadiz.

They rode the 4.58-km bike lane that stretches from the Santolan station of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 up to Imelda Avenue.

A news release of the MMDA said the Marcos Highway bike lanes have traffic directional signs and safety devices to aid bike riders.

"These dedicated lanes are intended to ensure the safety of the bicycle riders who traverse Metro Manila's major roads," Tolentino said. — ELR, GMA News
