Drivers confused as MMDA starts bus segregation scheme
Instances of first-day confusion marred the first day of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's bus segregation scheme along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) Tuesday.
Some bus drivers failed to stop at their designated bus stations but attributed this to "first-day confusion," radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.
The report said that along a portion of EDSA in Quezon City from Kamuning to Santolan, some buses were observed loading and unloading passengers in non-designated areas, causing heavy traffic at the southbound part.
A separate report by dzBB's Sam Nielsen quoted MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino as saying he expects some bus drivers to be confused about the implementation of the new scheme.
But in an interview on dzBB radio earlier Tuesday, Tolentino maintained they will not allow colorum buses, or those without the proper stickers and markings, to ply EDSA.
"Hindi namin patatakbuhin ngayon. 'Di sila makakabiyahe. Sa dulo pa lang ng Fairview hindi na sila makakalabas," he said.
On Tuesday, the MMDA started its bus segregation scheme, with buses marked A and B allowed to stop only at appropriately marked bus stops.
Under the scheme, buses marked A will stop at:
- Southbound: Ermin Garcia, Arayat Cubao, VV Soliven, Connecticut, Shaw Starmall, Guadalupe, Buendia Ave., Mantrade
- Northbound: Ermin Garcia, Cubao Farmers, Boni Serrano, SM Megamall, Shaw Blvd., Guadalupe, Buendia Ave., Magallanes
Buses marked B will stop at:
- Southbound: Kamuning, Monte de Piedad, Main Ave., POEA Ortigas, Pioneer/Boni, Estrella, Ayala Ave.
- Northbound: Baliwag/5Star, Main Ave., Ortigas Ave., SM Megamall, Pioneer/Boni, Estrella, Ayala Ave.
The MMDA said it hopes to decongest traffic along EDSA with the bus scheme. —KG, GMA News
