Kris Aquino endorses UNA bet in Makati

Raising a few eyebrows, TV host-actress and presidential sister Kris Aquino endorsed a candidate from United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) instead of one from the administration-backed Liberal Party (LP) in the Makati vice mayoral race.

Kris, the youngest sister of President Benigno Aquino III, was in Makati on Saturday endorsing former city administrator Marjorie de Veyra, who is running against incumbent Vice Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña, Jr. of LP, GMA News' Vicky Morales said in a 24 Oras report on Monday. President Aquino is the chairman of LP.

Comedian John "Sweet" Lapus was also present during the campaign, the report said.

De Veyra is the running mate of re-electionist Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, who was not present during the campaign, according to the the report.

According to Peña's running mate, Atty. Rene Bondal, they respect Kris' decision to endorse De Veyra, as the actress is not a member of LP, the report said.

For his part, Sen. Franklin Drilon, LP campaign manager, said he was not aware of what happened because this was a local campaign.

Meanwhile, UNA campaign manager Rep. Toby Tiangco welcomed Kris' endorsement of their candidate.

"An endorsement from Kris Aquino is always a big help. We would like to thank her and we really appreciate it," Tiangco was quoted in the report. - Carmela G. Lapeña, VVP, GMA News
