MMDA: 2-way traffic on Airport Road starting Friday

Starting Friday, authorities will allow two-way traffic on Airport Road in southern Metro Manila in anticipation of heavy traffic once construction of the EDSA Taft Flyover starts in August.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said the two-way traffic setup will take effect at 10 a.m. of Friday, May 10.

"Two lanes will be for vehicles going to Roxas Boulevard, while the other two lanes will be for vehicles going to Andrews Avenue," MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said.

"I am urging the concerned local government units, particularly the barangay officials, to remove all illegally-parked vehicles and other forms of obstruction along Airport Road to facilitate a smooth flow of vehicular traffic," he added.

He added an assessment will follow the implementation of the new traffic scheme along Airport Road to evaluate whether it has improved the traffic situation in the area.

The EDSA-Taft flyover will start in front of the Heritage Hotel and end near the Malibay Bridge. Its construction is expected to be completed in 15 months.

MMDA traffic director Noemi Recio said traffic signals and signs are already in place to control the intersections in affected roads.

Tolentino said the construction of the EDSA-Taft flyover in August would affect Parañaque and Pasay Cities.

The MMDA said the new traffic scheme came after a consultation meeting under the Metro Traffic Watch program last week.

Represented were the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC), transport organizations from the area, and traffic bureau chiefs of Pasay and Parañaque. —KG, GMA News
