Erap leads Lim, set to be proclaimed Manila Mayor

(UPDATED 10:00 a.m.) - Former Philipine President Joseph Ejercito Estrada is set to be officially proclaimed as the new mayor of Manila as he leads incumbent Mayor Alfredo Lim by roughly 30,000 votes as of Tuesday morning.

According to an earlier report from GMA reporter Sandra Aguinaldo, Estrada needed only four
percent of the total votes to be officially proclaimed as the new mayor of Manila.

Board of City Canvassers Chairman Atty. Jayvee Villagracia said they will be asking permission from the Commission on Election (Comelec) to lower the threshold of the votes so that Estrada can already be proclaimed as the new Manila mayor.

Estrada of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) has 288,058 votes while Lim of the Liberal Party (LP) has 257,631 votes as of posting time.

In an update at around 10:00 a.m., Aguinaldo said the Comelec has already agreed to lower the threshold of votes.

Estrada's UNA running-mate Isko Domagoso also leads the vice mayoralty race with 329,596 votes as of posting time.

On the other hand, Lou Veloso, LP's vice mayoralty bet, has 196,967 votes as of posting time.

Estrada, Domogoso, and Veloso are all Philippine actors. Domogoso is more popularly known by his screen name Isko Moreno.

The total number of registered voters in Manila is around 900,000. Monday's polls yielded more or less 650,000 votes, Aguinaldo's report said.

'Asiong Salonga, Dirty Harry'

The mayoralty race in Manila is one of the most closely watched by the public in Metro Manila with colorful contenders who are known by the tags "Asiong Salonga" for Estrada, and "Dirty Harry" for Lim.

Estrada played the lead role in the movie "Asiong Salonga" about a 1950s Filipino mob boss.

On the other hand, Lim is known for his "cop exploits," similar to "Dirty Harry," the lead character in the Hollywood movie starring Clint Eastwood.

Days before the May 13 election, Estrada and Lim continued to trade barbs.

In a speech before a barangay event in Manila last Friday, Estrada referred to Lim as “Lolong,” recorded as the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity by the Guinness World Record when it was still alive.

“Kaya Lolong po ang tawag eh masyadong buwaya,” the former president said in a report on GMA News TV’s “State of the Nation.”

"Buwaya" is a Filipino slang word for a corrupt person.

On the other hand, Lim said: “Piliin ninyo ‘yung karapat-dapat, alam ko naman hindi niyo pipiliin yung convicted for plunder at ang sentensiya ay habang-buhay.”

The former president has been convicted for plunder in 2007 but he was subsequently released out of prison, thanks to an unconditional presidential pardon granted by his former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

This is not the first time that Estrada and Lim opposed each other for a government post. In 1998, they were both presidential candidates with Estrada winning by a landslide victory.
