Manila authorities probe gas leak, advise Sta. Ana, Pandacan residents to evacuate
Authorities early Sunday advised residents in the city's Sta. Ana and Pandacan districts to leave their homes as they investigate a possible gas leak in the area.
Outgoing Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim made the appeal after residents in the two districts near the Pasig River complained of a foul smell.
"Yung bata, likas muna kayo sa Main Road o Otis o Pedro Gil para hindi kayo malapit. Inaalam natin saan nanggagaling ang oil o gas leak na ito (Residents especially children should go to the Main Road or Otis or Pedro Gil to get away from the possible leak. We're trying to get to the bottom of this)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.
He said they are looking at a warehouse owned by one Mr. Sy as the possible source of the smell.
In the meantime, Lim advised residents to go to the hospital in Sta. Ana if they felt unwell.
"Ang ospital ng Sta. Ana nakabukas (The hospital in Sta. Ana is open)," he said.
Several residents earlier complaiend of a foul smell that could indicate a gas leak or oil spill.
A separate report on Bombo Radyo said some of the affected areas included Barangay 890 in Pandacan, United Nations, and even areas near Malacañang.
The Bombo Radyo report said teams from the Metropoltian Manila Development Authority, Philippine Coast Guard and Bureau of Fire Protection went to the area.

Pandacan
Pandacan has been an industrial zone for the past 90 years. However, Ordinances 8027 (2001) and 8119 (2006) rezoned it, designating it for commercial use.
In 2009, Ordinance 8187 reclassified the area as a heavy industrial zone, allowing the oil depot to remain in Manila.
The Pandacan oil depot supplies roughly 50 percent of the country’s total fuel demand and 100 percent of the transport and industrial sector’s lubricants.
More than 1,800 retail stations in Regions 1 to 4 — of which about 500 are in Metro Manila — get their fuel supply from the facility.
