Canvassing of votes in Batasan Hills in Quezon City expected to be over by Wednesday

It usually takes about two days to finish vote counting and canvassing at Barangay Batasan Hills and this time around that seems to be the case as according to a report by GMA News Ivan Mayrina on the “24 Oras” newscast, school officials said they expect their poll duties to be over by Wednesday morning.

As of live telecast time, votes from 89 of 185 clustered precincts were canvassed.

A canvassing board of only three members is taking on the workload. Barangay Batasan Hills has about 200,000 residents, 69,072 registered voters and seven different voting centers spread out across the vast barangay.

The canvassing board was able to start consolidating the votes from the precincts and voting centers only after midnight of Monday.

“'Pag natapos na 'yung teachers, 'yung transportation galing ng Comelec ang bagal. Kawawa 'yung teachers, hirap na hirap sila kagabi. Inabot sila ng two o'clock ng madaling araw bago sila nakuha, bago sila nakapag-submit ng election return nila dito,” said Dr. Elvira Dumlao, principal of Batasan Hills National High School.

Three candidates are vying for barangay chairman of Batasan Hills, while 39 ran for the position of council member of kagawad. Most of these candidates have their own poll watchers.

Despite the hardships, the canvassers and election tellers in Batasan Hills said they might be able to finish the canvassing of votes by Wednesday morning.  — Rie Takumi/JDS/ELR, GMA News
