Chase causes tension at DLSU Taft campus

A brief chase involving a man and police and security personnel briefly caused tension in front of the De La Salle University campus along busy Taft Avenue in Manila Wednesday afternoon.

The chase occurred at about 4:55 p.m. along Taft Avenue, according to a report on the school's official publication The LaSallian.

The LaSallian described the man as a graduate from the University of the Philippines who was denied entry at Henry Sy Gate for having an outdated campus pass.

It quoted Security and Safety Office (SSO) officer Allen Capones as saying the man "initially resisted upon being denied entry," leading to a misunderstanding and the chase.

"Apparently, the man failed to return his campus pass when he initially borrowed one last December 4, in order to conduct appropriate transactions in Br. Andrew Gonzales Hall. The student was applying for a graduate program in DLSU," the report said.

Capones said the security personnel caught up with the man and brought him in for questioning, but added the matter has been "settled."

"The man got off with a stern warning to not cause disturbances within the University premises," The LaSallian said.

Quoting its unofficial sources, the report said the man had also been the subject of a complaint by a member of the DLSU community for allegedly disturbing the peace.

It said the man was allegedly waiting outside the classroom of the complainant and was following the complainant.

However, the man claimed to be acquainted with the complainant. Capones said there could be a "personal issue" between the man and the complainant.

The man has since written a letter of apology and clarification to Security Director Dionisio Escarez, with a copy sent to Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Service Jay Calleja.  — ELR, GMA News
