DOH: 9-year-old Tondo boy first fireworks-related injury of holiday season

A nine-year-old boy from Manila's Tondo district became the first fireworks-related injury case for this year, the Department of Health said Sunday.

National Epidemiology Center head Dr. Enrique Tayag said on his Twitter account that their tally showed one injury as of 6 a.m. Sunday.

"One firework related injury: a nine-year-old boy from Tondo who used piccolo," he said.

He did not name the injured boy or describe the injury.

Tayag added that during the same period last year, there were seven injuries recorded.

"Children are easy victims of firework-related injuries," he also said in an earlier tweet.

Last Saturday, the DOH started its yearly count of fireworks-related injuries for the Christmas and New Year period.

Citing data from last year, Tayag said at least 27 percent of the fireworks-related injuries from 2012-2013 were due to the piccolo. — BM, GMA News
