Eco group lauds Iglesia ni Cristo for clean walkathon

An ecological group on Saturday lauded the Iglesia ni Cristo for keeping its charity walk for survivors of super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) clean.

The EcoWaste Coalition said it was "delighted" to see the route of the charity walk "devoid of unsightly and filthy trash."

"We commend the organizers and participants for manifesting their solidarity  with the victims in an earth-friendly way.  Luneta was litter-free as it should be," said coordinator Aileen Lucero.

She added there was no stench in the area that indicated people may have relieved themselves on the walls.

Last January, devotees of the Black Nazarene were criticized for littering the route of the traslacion (procession) and some were chided for relieving themselves on walls.

"We hope other faith and non-faith groups conducting outdoor events will follow suit and ensure that the surroundings are kept clean and tidy as they gather for fun, leisure, politics or worship," Lucero said.

Earlier Saturday, INC members started a charity walk for Yolanda survivors in Manila. The walk also aimed to set a new world record for a charity walk. — LBG, GMA News
