Traffic near Batasan to be rerouted on SONA day; cops inspect potential hotspots

Traffic near the Batasan Complex in Quezon City will be rerouted on Monday, hours before President Benigno Aquino III delivers his State of the Nation Address, the Philippine National Police said Friday.

PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac disclosed this even as he maintained there is no security threat to the SONA at this time.

"Magkakaroon ng traffic rerouting schemes, may counterflow," Sindac said in an interview on dzBB radio, adding the details would come from the Metro Manila police and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.

An earlier dzBB report said some parts of Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City may be closed to traffic at 6 a.m. Monday, with a Fairview-bound portion of the road open to counterflow.

Police will tightly guard IBP Road, San Mateo-Batasan Road, and Litex Road against protesters who may try to sneak to the Batasan Complex.

Groups planning rallies will not be allowed to go beyond the Ever Commonwealth area.

He also said that as of Friday, there is no security threat to the SONA.

"Lahat na possible scenarios tinitingnan ng PNP. As of now walang anumang threat na dapat ikabahala ng mamamayan," he said.

‘Hotspot’ inspections

An earlier dzBB report said police led by Quezon City police head Chief Superintendent Richard Albano inspected potential hotspots, or areas where protesters are likely to gather.

Albano also said they have formulated plans on how to deal with some groups that may try to provoke them.
