Rapping nurse gives joy to patients at East Av Medical

By busting out rhymes in fast-paced beats, a nurse has found a novel way of energizing her patients.

Fatima Palma, who's five years into her nursing career, told GMA's "24 Oras" Tuesday that rapping was her way to give a something extra to her patients.

She also admitted that it made her tough career a little more light-hearted.

"Minsan, umaabot ako sa punto na kaakusapin ko sila, tapos mamamatay sila sa harap ko. Ganun siya ka-tragic. Kaya ako nag-rap kasi parang ang lungkot eh. Kung malulungkot ako, mas malulungkot sila," Palma said.

She added, "Kaligayahan ko 'yun eh. Kaligayahan ko na gawin 'yun. Tingin ko kasi kapag ginawa ko 'yun, magiging maligaya rin yung pasiyente ko."

Her antics was first caught on tape by Daf Marquesses, the child of one of her former patients at East Avenue Medical Center. The video eventually went viral, garnering 615 shares and at least 1,194 likes, prompting many news sites to feature the nurse's talents.

"Ang nangyari, naggagamot ako. Tinapos ko na gamot ko sa daddy ni Daff. Sabi ko... pasali naman. Sabi niya, o sige, magra-rap tayo ta's nagtatawanan sila," Palma said when she joined the patient's loved ones rap near the sickbed.

In her post, Marqueses wrote, "Nurse Fatima of EAMC thank you for taking care of my father and entertaining him while he was in the hospital and still alive. His life in the hospital was really painful but... nurses like you eased the pain for a bit even to us."

She reiterated her thanks in a phone interview with "24 Oras", adding that nurses of Palma's caliber definitely helped them with their crisis.

Palma answered the post, thanking the woman for appreciating what she did.

"Most patients are struggling for their lives, kaya kahit ganun, kaligayahan namin makapagserbisyo at makapagpaligaya ng mga pasyente even if it means having to go the extra mile to do so, we will," she wrote. —Rie Takumi/NB, GMA News
