DOLE organizing Diskwento Caravans in 3rd quarter

The Department of Labor and Employment is holding Diskwento Caravans in the third quarter of 2014 to help laborers cope with high costs of living.

In a news release, the DOLE said the Diskwento Caravan is a mechanism to provide relief to workers though non-wage benefits.

“The caravans shall be held immediately after the paydays and preferably within the grounds of the city/town halls identified by the local government unit. In prioritizing the LGUs hosting the caravans, the DOLE shall consider municipalities densely-populated by low-income households,” DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said.

For 2014, the NWPC and DOLE-NCR will make available at discounted prices:

- canned goods
- noodles
- rice
- juice
- coffee
- processed meats
- condiments
- milk
- medicines
- school uniforms
- bags
- shoes
- bath and detergent soaps
- basic apparel

DOLE’s National Wages and Productivity Commission has been organizing Diskwento Caravans since 2008.

Baldoz said the NWPC and the DOLE-NCR, with the Department of Trade and Industry, local government units, and the Public Employment Service Offices, scheduled 13 Diskwento Caravans between September and December.

Diskwento Caravans stemmed from consultations by the DOLE with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas; DTI; Department of Energy; the DOTC’s Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board; and the Philippine Statistics Authority-Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (PSA-BAS).
