Driver in a coma after car rearends pedicab in Tondo

A pedicab driver in Manila is now in a coma after a car rammed her bicycle from behind, a report from GMA's “24-Oras” said on Tuesday.

The suspect in the hit-and-run incident that was caught on CCTV later surrendered to authorities.

The victim, Erlinda Tagonon, is now unconscious and confined at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

“Naka mechanical ventilator na rin po siya kasi hindi na siya makahinga sa sarili niya... Yung utak niya sa CT scan magang-maga po,” Dr. Alexander Tuliao explained.

The suspect identified as 22-year-old Marvin Jacildo will be facing reckless imprudence charges after he surrendered on Monday.

“Ang ikakaso dito sa suspect ay ang nakalagay po rito physical injuries. Reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injuries,” Manila Police Traffic Investigation Chief P/Sr. Insp. Rogelio Frias said.

In the CCTV footage, the suspect was seen hitting the rear end of the pedicab on Dagupan St. in Manila last Sunday.

This caused the victim to be hurled from the pedicab with the back of her head slamming the concrete.

According to Barangay Executive Officer Danilo Garcia, the accident may have been due to the speed of the vehicle and the fact that it was dark during that time.

“Walang ilaw itong street light. Madilim,” Garcia said.

The suspect is currently detained with the Manila Traffic Enforcement unit after being turned over by the Don Bosco Police Community Precint where he initially surrendered. —Andrei Medina/NB, GMA News
