LRT-1 Quirino station closed on certain hours, days during papal visit

The Light Rail Transit Line 1 that links Roosevelt Avenue in Quezon City to Baclaran will be operating during Pope Francis' visit on Jan. 15 to 19, but its Quirino station in Manila will be closed on certain hours and on certain days.

The Quirino station is near the Papal Nunciature where the pope will be billeted during his visit.

LRT Authority spokesman Hernando Cabrera said that there would be no loading or unloading at Quirino station on:

  • Jan. 15, 4 to 10 p.m.;
  • Jan. 16, whole day (5 a.m. to 10 p.m.);
  • Jan. 17, 5 to 9 a.m., 5 to 10 p.m. (station open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.);
  • Jan. 18, whole day (5 a.m. to 10 p.m.); and
  • Jan. 19, 5 to 9 a.m. (station open from 9 a.m. onward).

Last December, the Department of Transportation and Communications said it was studying whether LRT-1 operations would be suspended during the papal visit.

"Alam namin gagamitin ang Papal Nuncio so dumadaan ang LRT diyan, so may security preparations, pinag aaralan… baka i-request ng security wala pa namang final, baka kailangan nating ipatigil yung serbisyo ng LRT 1 for the security of the Pope," DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya had told Catholic Church-run Radio Veritas.

"(S)iguro maiintindihan naman ng mga gumagamit ng LRT 1 na pwede naman tayong magsakripisyo ng konti para sa security ng Santo Papa," Abaya added. — Joel Locsin/DVM, GMA News
