Ex-UDM teacher nabbed for allegedly falsifying admission slips for money

The Manila City Hall Police Detachment on Monday arrested a former teacher of the Universidad de Manila after he allegedly attempted to enroll 38 students using fake admission slips he made at the rate of P600 to P1,000 per student.

The scheme supposedly carried out by 32-year-old Glenn Abello was uncovered when the registrar could not find the students' names on the masterlist of university entrance exam passers.

The fake admission slips also bore the rubber-stamped signature of UDM Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Ronald Herrera.

Initial investigation revealed that Abello taught Mathematics in UDM in 2014, but his teaching appointment was cancelled after a year when the school discovered that the credentials he submitted were fake.

According to the police, Abello was able to use his previous connections at the school to lure students into paying him for admission: "Ang modus operandi, ini-escort-an ang bata, sinasamahan niya papasok para maipakita niya sa kanyang ka-transaksyon na in and out siya sa eskwelahan." Police Chief Inspector Bernabe Irinco, Jr. said.

Police and UDM officials presented Abello to Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, who immediately ordered the filing of necessary charges.

Estrada advised the students to be more cautious: "'Wag silang maniniwala sa mga ganyan. Pumunta sila directly sa eskwelahan and inquire. We have all the teachers there."

According to UDM legal counsel Marvin Mesia, the university will file charges of falsification of public documents against Abella. The students meanwhile may file complaints of estafa.

Mesia also warned that students who knowingly attempt to enrol in the university through illegal means may be blacklisted.

Authorities are encouraging the students who were victimized in the scheme to work with them so that the students may file charges, take the entrance exam, and enrol for the school year. — BM, GMA News
