Residents affected by Caloocan demolition ask city govt for relocation site

The informal settlers of the Calaanan compound in Caloocan City are asking the local government for relocation and financial support after their homes were demolished this week, a report from GMA's “News to Go” said Wednesday.

According to the report, only the families who initially agreed to a settlement were given the P60,000 financial aid. Those who did not reportedly got nothing.

The residents said they were not provided a relocation site where they could start building new houses.

Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan said that the local government couldn't provide a relocation site for the residents since the site of the demolition was private property.

Malapitan said the city government only implemented the court order. He said all the city could provide was food for the affected residents.

Police are currently on standby to prevent further violence that might occur due to the demolition.

On Tuesday, violence erupted on the demolition's first day after a resident opened fire at authorities. Four policemen were hurt, with one sustaining a bullet wound in his left thigh. -Andrei Medina/NB, GMA News
