Commuters endure long lines as fewer MRT trains left running

(Updated 9:22 a.m.) Commuters on Tuesday morning had to endure long queues at Metro Rail Transit stations due to fewer trains available.

Out of the 20 trains that should have been running if operations were going smoothly, only 12 trains were on the tracks as of past 7 a.m.

The first trip was also supposed to have been at 4:30 a.m, but there was a delay, with the first train out at past 5 a.m.

At 5:30 a.m., only five trains were running, although this did not cause much inconvenience to the few passengers at that time.

At 5:50 a.m., the MRT management was able to field nine trains.

"Karamihan sa problema natin ay sa air conditioning," according to MRT General Manager Roman Buenafe.

Management said their maintenance people are doing all they can to make it possible for more trains to run on the tracks.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Tuesday offered free rides to commuters affected by the limited MRT operations, radio dzBB reported.

In a separate report aired on GMA News TV's News To Go, reporter Mark Salazar said only nine trains were operating as of 7 a.m., with lines of passengers going as far as 1 km. long.

The report said it is protocol for the MRT management not to field out trains with busted airconditioning system, even when their engines are functioning.

It added that authorities have said they are rushing the repairs of these trains, but no specific time has been given. — with Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/KG/RSJ, GMA News
