Thousands of Torre De Manila workers find themselves jobless

(UPDATED 9:04 p.m.) Some 2,000 workers could lose their jobs after the Supreme Court ordered the construction of the controversial Torre De Manila suspended, GMA News' reported on Wednesday.

Property developer DMCI Homes suspended construction work at Torre de Manila, a day after the high court issued a temporary restraining order against the 46-storey condominium project.

"DMCI Homes will immediately comply with the Supreme Court's temorary restraining order that our counsel received yesterday," the company said in a statement sent to GMA News Online.

A number of construction workers were initially barred from entering the project site when they showed up for work.

The workers, who apparently missed the advisory ahead of their shift, were later allowed inside to get their personal belongings, according to the report.

DMCI Homes will assign affected workers to work on other projects. The property developer, however, could not accommodate all the workers in other projects, the report said.

The Order of the Knights of Rizal asked the SC to order the suspension and demolition of Torre de Manila for marring the vista of the monument of Philippine hero Jose Rizal in Luneta.

"DMCI Homes is now studying remedies in light of the TRO, including a motion to lift it as soon as possible so as not to compromise our completion target and protect the interest of our condominium unit buyers," the company said. -Keith Richard Mariano/NB, GMA News
