Help prevent floods by not littering, MMDA reminds public

The Metro Manila Development Authority has reminded the public to refrain from littering to keep garbage from clogging pumping stations that are supposed to help prevent flooding.

According to a report on "24 Oras Weekend" on Sunday, the MMDA had 54 pumping stations and needs around 19 more to address flooding in the metropolis.

But, the MMDA said, the pumping stations will not be as effective if people keep throwing their garbage indiscriminately.

"Pag dumadami ang basura sa pumping station, hindi maka-function in its 100 percent capacity ang mga pumping stations natin, so kailangan tayong huminto ng pag-pump ng mga tubig baha natin para lang linisin muna ang basura," Emerson Carlos, MMDA assistant general manager for operations, said.

The MMDA has been cleaning the pumping stations, and has also been clearing garbage that has washed up along Manila Bay.

"Ang situation po rito, lahat po ng basura na lumabas sa mga estero, dito po natatambak sa tabi ng US Embassy," Francis Martinez of the MMDA Metro Parkway Cleaning Group said. — JDS, GMA News
