Over 1,000 Parañaque residents homeless after Malugay fire
By TRICIA ZAFRA, GMA News
Over a thousand people lost their homes Thursday evening when fire broke out and spread on Malugay Street in Barangay San Martin de Porres in Parañaque City. There were no reported casualties.
The fire that started at 5:43 pm quickly devoured around a hundred houses from Zone 2 to Zone 6 of the Malugay area.
The Parañaque fire department raised the Task Force Echo alarm at 7:38 pm to call for firefighters from neighboring cities to respond.
However, according to fire victims, it was not until around 9 in the evening when additional firetrucks started coming in.
"Matagal bago dumating yung mga... bumbero", a resident said.
Fire chief inspector Renato Capuz said heavy traffic kept the firefighters from getting to Malugay quickly.
"Nakita niyo naman sumabay tayo sa rush hour. Matagal, kasi nga, dito sa Metro Manila wala tayong report araw araw kundi trapik."
Firefighters got the fire under control at 10:28 pm.
Damage caused by the fire is pegged at P3 million.
Authorities are still determining how the fire started.
Meanwhile, victims who put up makeshift tents and temporary shelters on sidewalks of Malugay and on the center island of the East Service Road are appealing for assistance.
"Kailangan namin tulong ni mayor: pagkain o matirahan namin", one of the victims said. — ELR, GMA News
