Police at scene of shooting near DLSU in Manila; one person shot dead, YouScooper says

(Updated 11:01 a.m. August 28) "Someone just got shot," YouScoper Shinya Hamashima told GMA News early Friday morning via a tweet about a shooting incident along Taft Avenue in Manila in front of the Henry Sy building of the De La Salle University main campus.

Police responded to incident as can be seen in the image that was part of citizen journalist @hamashima31's tweet. Also in the foreground of the tweeted picture is a taxi.

In an interview with GMA News Online, Hamashima said he saw one dead victim in the passenger seat beside the driver's seat of the taxi that stopped near the U-turn slot closest to the DLSU Henry Sy building.

He said the driver was rushed to a hospital.

Hamashima said the fatality looked like a Korean.

A report on GMA News' "Unang Balita" said the slain victim was a Chinese tourist and his companion is also Chinese.

The YouScooper also said there was a third taxi passenger, appeared to be not hurt although he had some blood on his white shirt and arm.

The third passenger, who also looked Korean, came out of the passenger section behind the driver's seat, Hamashima said.

Hamashima said he was in the lobby of the building across the street from the DLSU building when the shots were fired and when he got out of the building the scene that he tweeted about was what he saw.

The YouScooper said the deadly shooting incident happened about 20 to 50 meters from a nearby police checkpoint and that proximity made him wonder how the police there would be unable to catch who shot at the victims when their checkpoint was so near the scene of the crime.

In the Unang Balita report, policemen manning a checkpoint near the area heard the gunshots. The lawmen chased the shooters, but to no avail. — Earl Victor Rosero/ALG, GMA News GMA News
