PNP: Give us chance to solve EDSA traffic
The Philippine National Police on Wednesday appealed to the public to give its Highway Patrol Group a chance to provide solution to the perennial traffic problem on EDSA, a day after President Benigno Aquino III took the group to task.
PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor told GMA News Online that it would be fair to first allow HPG policemen to do their work before assuming that they will just use their new assignment for corruption.
“Siguro maganda, let us give them a chance dahil hindi pa nga sila nagsisimula,” he said.
Mayor urged the motorists and the media to help ensure that these policemen do not resort to bribery, a common complaint against traffic enforcers in the country.
“Let the citizens be the watcher. Maging bantay tayo. Kayo mismo sa media kung may nakita kayong ginawa na masama i-report niyo and we will act on it,” he said.
“But for the meantime, let us give them a chance to do their duties as assigned by the President,” he added.
Mayor's statement came after Aquino ordered the HPG to lead the enforcement of traffic rules and ease the congestion on six chokepoints along EDSA.
Nearly a hundred armed HPG personnel will be deployed in shifts starting Monday to manage traffic and combat crime in Balintawak, Cubao, Ortigas, Shaw Boulevard, Guadalupe and Taft Avenue. —KBK, GMA News
