The Quezon City government had launched clearing operations on eight market places in the Balintawak area, noting vendors' violations including sanitation and traffic obstruction.

Vendors had opposed the clearing operations, saying they can't afford to pay for the market rental and instead sell their goods on the sidewalks.

City officials had insisted that the vendors were repeatedly warned of their violations, yet they continue their illegal market operation.

Quezon City had decided to shut down the Balintawak Market citing sanitary standards.  — LBG, GMA News
