Jail officers seize 16 guns from Bilibid's maximum security compound

Jail officers have recovered 16 firearms hidden in a coin donation box and under the floor of one of the rooms inside the National Bilibid Prison's maximum security compound.

A report on Balitanghali on Sunday said that two of the firearms -- A 9mm Taurus handgun and .40 Bersa Thunder -- were registered under the names of a certain Jerry B. Fideli and a certain Carlos V. Cruz.

The report added that two more handguns had defaced serial numbers  the remaining 12 guns are considered loose firearms.

Bureau of Corrections chief Rainer Cruz said that they will not stop until they identify the persons responsible for smuggling the firearms into the maximum security compound.

Cruz said that aside from stricter security measure at the detention facility, they are also planning to increase the height of the compound's walls as they suspect some of the illegal items are being smuggled through the prison walls.

In a number of raids last December, authorities found luxury items, illegal drugs and high powered firearms from "kubols" inside the detention facility.
