QC gov’t to shut down Internet shops that accept students during school hours

The Quezon City Council has decided to shut down computer shops that accept students as customers during school hours, said Quezon City Councilor Bong Suntay.

According to Suntay, the basis for this decision is Ordinance Number 2163 series of 2012, which says students, especially minors, are only allowed to enter Internet shops from 4-11 p.m. and can only work on school projects.

The Council was prompted to take action after receiving numerous complaints from parents that their children were cutting classes so they could go to computer shops to play games. Suntay added that some students even visit porn or violent web sites.

Under Ordinance No. 2163, violent sites “refer to a web site on the internet which downloads brutal, furious, vicious, and forceful materials.”

Students as young as 10 years old have been reported to be present at Internet shops.

Internet shops found to be in violation of Ordinance No. 2163 will be fined P2,000.

Third time offenses will be fined P5,000 and will face the appropriate charges. The shop will also be closed down. —Bea Montenegro/KG, GMA News
