Investigators identify alleged killer of retired Manila police officer


Police investigators have a suspect in the killing of 77-year-old retired Police Supt. Cipriano Herrera, who was stabbed do death in his Sta. Cruz, Manila home early Sunday.

Accordiong to a Monday report on GMA 7 news program “24 Oras”, a CCTV camera caught the alleged killer leaving Herrera's house at the victim's time of death. Based on the security camera footage, the victim's family identified the suspect as their former family driver.

"Based doon sa build ng katawan, papaano maglakad, iyong usual na itsura niya, iyon ang profile [ng dating driver]. Kasi hindi lang naman kami at ang mga police ang tumingin, may mga friends din kami outside na nag-check na pinatignan namin na pwede nga siya iyon," Herrara's daughter Jing said.

In the video, the suspect was holding a bag which investigators believed was filled with stolen items from the Herrera's residence. The man also took the family's Ford EcoSport.

Jing said that the suspect had been their family driver for a long time. They trusted him because he was their household help's son. But the family recently fired him because he had become negligent with his job.

The family's housemaid, the suspect's mother, meanwhile claimed that she saw a man who was wearing a cap on his way out of the house. But she said she was sure it was not her son.

"Kung talagang siya, mapatunayan na siya, wala akong magagawa kung anuman ang mangyayari sa kanya," she said. — Trisha Macas/DVM, GMA News
