Guia Gomez, Francis Zamora face off as Ejercitos, Zamoras break alliance
San Juan Mayor Guia Gomez and Vice Mayor Francis Zamora will face each other for the mayoralty after decades of political alliance between the Ejercito and Zamora families.
According to Mariz Umali's report on “24 Oras,” Zamora started his campaign on Monmday with a mass at the Sanctuario de Santo Cristo Kabayanan Church, which was followed by a proclamation rally.
Aside from his supporters, also with the candidate was his father longtime San Juan Representative Ronnie Zamora, who was the former Executive Secretary of Joseph Estrada.
Estrada, the father Gomez's son Senator JV Ejercito, was also a former mayor of San Juan.
The younger Zamora said he wanted to stop the dynasty of the Ejercito-Estrada clan, who has run San Juan's politics for more than 40 years.
“Sapagkat sa loob ng mahabang panahon, sa loob ng 46 na taon, hinawakan ng pamilya Estrada ang San Juan. Ngayon lamang magkakaroon ng pagkakataon ang ating mga mamamayan na makapili,” Zamora said.
Gomez lead the inauguration of the newly-renovated Ermitanyo Creek followed by the awarding of medals to retiring officers of the San Juan City Hall, and the awarding ceremony for the poster-making contest in the city's Fire Department.
Gomez scheduled a proclamation rally on Tuesday at the Pinaglabanan Shrine.
According to the official list of candidates from Comelec, running as Gomez's vice mayor is Sen. Jinggoy Estrada's daughter Janella Estrada, whose rivals include Zamora's ally Rolando Bernardo, and independent candidate Glenn Angeles. —Bianca Rose Dabu/NB, GMA News
