Pregnant woman among two dead in Commonwealth Avenue accident

A pregnant woman was among the two people who died on Friday morning when a public utility bus and a UV Express collided on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, a report on Balitanghali by Oscar Oida and Mark Salazar said.

Kristine Joy San Felipe, six months pregnant, was waiting for a ride when the A. Prado Bus ran over pedestrians after it collided with the UV Express.

The accident occurred at the corner of Regalado and Commonwealth Avenues at 6:30 a.m.

Staff of the Commonwealth Hospital and Medical Center in Fairview tried to save the baby in San Felipe's womb but the baby was already dead when it came out.

San Felipe's husband Ardwin told GMA News he saw the accident himself.

Aside from Felipe, another pedestrian, a man, also died due to the accident while waiting for a ride.

Twelve others were brought to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) chairman Winston Ginez checked on the victims at the hospital.

Ginez ordered the suspension of operation of Martel Bus Company which bought A. Prado.

The human resources administration officer of Martel Bus Company promised that the company will pay for the victims' hospital expenses.

The company, however, insisted that the brakes of the bus were not defective, contrary to the claim of driver Mark Joey Acedera.

Saying the bus' brakes failed, Acedera asked forgiveness from the victims' kin.

He is currently being held at the Traffic Sector 2 of the Quezon City Police District.

Sr. Insp. Marlon Meman of the QCPD Traffic Sector 2 said Acedera will face raps of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple physical injury.

A passenger of the bus said that when he boarded in Fairview, he already noticed that the bus was going too fast.

Edwin Aninon, driver of the UV Express involved in the accident, said the bus was at a fast pace when it bumped into his vehicle.

He added he brought some passengers of the bus to the hospital and they were all conscious at the time. —KG, GMA News
