Miriam College suspends lower, middle school classes due to Katipunan fire
Miriam College suspended the classes of its Lower and Middle Schools on Thursday after smoke from a nearby fire entered its buildings.
In an advisory released past 1 p.m., the college announced that the affected students may be fetched.
"To ensure safety, classes at the Lower & Middle Schools are suspended this afternoon. Lower School students may be fetched any time while dismissal for the Middle School is at 1:15 pm," it said.
Shoppersville Supermarket, which is located across Miriam College in Katipunan Avenue, was razed by a fire that started before 5 a.m.
The fire was declared out by the Quezon City Bureau of Fire and Protection at 9:50 a.m.
Authorities earlier requested the Multiple Intelligence International School, located at the back of Shoppersville, to cancel their classes because of the thick smoke from the fire.
While Miriam College was not expected to be affected by the fire, it canceled its classes due to the shift in wind direction.
"While the Shoppersville fire incident has been declared under control by the QC Fire Department, wind direction has shifted towards the Lower & Middle Schools causing smoke to enter the said areas," the announcement read. —Jessica Bartolome/KG, GMA News
