QC, Navotas welcome SC TRO vs. curfew on minors


On the heels of Supreme Court's issuance of a temporary restraining order against curfew ordinances on children in three Metro Manila cities, the local governments of Quezon City and Navotas said it welcomed the high court's decision.

GMA News reporter Lia Mañalac Del Castillo said in a tweet that the LGUs of Quezon City and Navotas welcomed the high court's TRO on the curfew ordinances.

 

 

"The QC Government welcomes the TRO issued by the Supreme Court. It is best that the SC look into the constitutionality of the city ordinance for the city government's guidance," Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista said in a statement.

Meanhwile, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada clarrified that the recent operations against curfew viloators were unauthorized by him.

 

 

Estrada said that he believes that it should be the President who should issue a curfew ordinance.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court temporarily stopped ordinances imposing a curfew on children in Manila, Quezon City, and Navotas. 

Samahan ng mga Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK) filed the petition against the three LGUs' curfew ordinance.

The petitioners argued that the curfew ordinances were "ultra vires" or issued beyond the legal power and authority o the LGUs, for being contrary to Republic Act 9344 or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act. — Ted Cordero/RSJ, GMA News
