Two hurt as Manila City Jail inmates hold noise barrage vs. warden
Two inmates sustained minor wounds while climbing the roof of the Manila City Jail as a noise barrage was held on Thursday in what appeared to be a call for the ouster of the warden.
Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Senior Inspector Henry Fabro said an investigation is being conducted into noise barrage incident that started before 10:00 a.m. and lasted for more than two hours
In a statement, the BJMP, which runs the prison facility, said some 200 inmates belonging to Dorms 9 and 10 of Batang City Jail had denounced Jail Supt. Gerald Bantag's management.
The BJMP said the inmates were opposing the segregation or reclassification of drug offenders in the jail that houses more than 3,900 detainees.
"The purpose of segregation is to give the inmates who were jailed of substance abuse with proper interventions such as therapy programs, physical fitness programs, counseling, and spiritual enhancement activities," the BJMP said.
During the noise barrage, some inmates even went to the roof of the detention facility to hold up a banner denouncing Bantag, the BJMP said.
