Caloocan City holds wreath-laying ceremony on Bonifacio Day

A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan City to celebrate the 153rd birthday of Gat Andres Bonifacio on Wednesday.

In a report on Unang Balita, the program began at around 7 a.m. with the raising of the Philippine flag followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Philippine Flag.

Attendees then offered prayers and flowers to the monument. President Rodrigo Duterte and the local government of Caloocan City sent flowers to the event.

Spearheading the event were several Caloocan City officials including Mayor Oscar Malapitan, Rep. Along Malapitan and Rep. Edgar Erice.

Members of the Bonifacio family also attended the event.

Bonifacio, born November 30, 1863, was one of the founders of the Kataas-taasang, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK) who fought the Spaniards during the last decade of their rule. He was dubbed as “The Father of the Philippine Revolution.”

For the locals of Caloocan, Bonifacio is a symbol of bravery and love of country. They pray that Filipinos continue what the hero had started more than a hundred years ago.

Meanwhile, police and military forces were deployed around the monument to ensure the safety during the program, as well as members of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and the city's Special Action Unit. —report from Victoria Tulad/Erwin Colcol/ALG, GMA News
